What Is Pressure-Activated Adhesive in Window Film?

Pressure-activated adhesive (also known as pressure-sensitive adhesive, PSA) is an adhesive that bonds immediately upon contact with a surface when light pressure is applied—without the need for heat, solvents, or water. Window film with pressure-activated adhesive allows for repositioning on the glass before it fully adheres.

🧲 How Does Pressure-Activated Adhesive Work?

Pressure-sensitive adhesive is made from a combination of:

  • Elastomers (rubber-like polymers)

  • Resins (for bonding strength)

  • Sometimes plasticisers (for flexibility)

When you press the adhesive against a surface, two things happen:

  1. Wet adhesion – The adhesive flows slightly and makes contact with microscopic surface irregularities (adhesion).

  2. Internal cohesion – The adhesive has enough internal strength (cohesion) to hold itself together after bonding.

💡 What Does It Mean That an Adhesive Is Pressure-Sensitive?

It means that:

  • It only needs light pressure to bond.

  • It bonds instantly without drying time.

  • It can, in some cases, be removed and reused (e.g., Post-it notes).

  • It depends on both surface energy and contact pressure.
