What Is IR Radiation and Why Is It Harmful?

IR radiation stands for infrared radiation and is a form of electromagnetic radiation—just like visible light, UV rays, or radio waves. IR radiation is commonly associated with heat radiation and is emitted by the sun. It is important to limit exposure to high levels of IR radiation to avoid potential harmful effects on the body. An effective window film can block a significant portion of the sun’s IR radiation.

🌈 Where on the Spectrum Is IR Radiation Found?

  • Wavelengths: approximately 700 nanometres (nm) to 1 millimetre (mm)

  • It lies just beyond red light in the visible spectrum, which is why it’s called infrared (infra = "below").

🔥 Characteristics of IR Radiation

  • Invisible to the eye, but we can feel it as heat.

  • All objects with a temperature above absolute zero (-273.15°C) emit IR radiation.

  • Used to measure heat, see in the dark, or transfer energy.

🧪 Applications

Use Description
🌡️ Thermal cameras Display temperature distribution
🎮 Remote controls Send signals to TVs
🛰️ Satellites and space telescopes Measure heat from planets, stars, etc.
💊 Medical diagnostics Thermal imaging to detect inflammation
🔬 Spectroscopy Analyse chemical bonds in molecules

🧠 Summary

Infrared radiation is invisible light that is mainly experienced as heat. To protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun’s IR radiation, you can install window film on your home’s glass surfaces to improve comfort and safety.
